Harrow care home residents set their eyes on the skies

Harrow care home residents set their eyes on the skiesResidents at a care home in Harrow celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, celebrating the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents turned the home’s café into a bird-themed sanctuary, and were joined by Hannah Papapetrou, from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, for an afternoon of avian-related crafts. Hannah led a special talk on how to attract more birds to the garden, as well as helping the residents to recycle plastic bottles by transforming them into insect hotels.

Ruth Halls, home manager at Buchanan Court, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Buchanan Court and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event.

“It was great to have Hannah joining us on the day – she really helped our birdwatch event to reach new heights, and the residents really enjoyed finding out more about alternative ways to attract birds to our garden and help the local wildlife to thrive.

“Connecting with nature is extremely beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation as well as conjuring happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Hannah and the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust for joining us and making the day so special.”
