‘Lest we forget’ – Bracknell care home inaugurates new memorial

Home news

A care home in Bracknell inaugurated a new war memorial to mark Remembrance Day.

Residents at Care UK’s Bickerton House, on Warfield Road, commemorated Remembrance Day by creating a poppy display out of tissue paper to remember their friends and families who served in the armed forces.

As part of a service on Remembrance Day, which was organised by the home, residents read poems, laid poppy wreaths and discussed their memories of wartime Britain.

Peter Hale, and a resident at Bickerton House, shared his memories of volunteering for the RAF when he turned 18 in 1940. After his basic training, he was taught to fly the iconic spitfire plane, and flew across Europe, including Belgium, Holland and Germany, intercepting bombs. He also chatted to other residents about his memories of VE Day, which occurred when he was on leave in Worthing, where he saw celebrations and street parties across the whole city.

Erika Smith, Home Manager at Bickerton House, said: “We wanted to do something special to mark this year’s Armistice Day and to remember those who have served in the armed forces, including some of the residents, and their friends and family.

“Creating poppies was a wonderful way for residents to take part in the Remembrance Day activities – and it was fantastic to hear the memories of residents growing up in wartime Britain and serving their country. We’re thrilled with the result of their hard work, and it’s great to see the poppies displayed in the home for everyone to see.” ‘Lest we forget’ – Bracknell care home inaugurates new memorial
