‘Don’t sit on your backside for too long’ – Cheadle care home resident reveals secret to a long life

Home news

A Cheadle home resident has celebrated her 100th birthday and revealed her secret to living a long and happy life – happiness and keeping active.

Doris Robins, from Care UK’s Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, marked the impressive milestone on 15th July, and was joined by residents and team members to toast the special occasion.

Revealing her secret to a long and happy life, Doris said: “The secret is to be happy – and not to sit on your backside for too long! I’ve enjoyed all of my birthday celebrations, but the highlight was spending time with my family, as well as my wonderful party with my friends at Abney Court.”

Enjoying the special day with a slice of birthday cake and a host of special gifts, the team went above and beyond to ensure former Women’s Royal Naval Service member Doris enjoyed a celebration like no other complete with live entertainment from singer, Deborah McCormick.

Andrew McIntyre, Home Manager at Abney Court, said: “Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating Doris’ birthday, and she was particularly pleased to receive her official card from the Queen.

“Here at Abney Court, we always strive to make an occasion of birthdays, and Doris’ 100th was no exception. We had great fun decorating the home, baking her a special birthday cake and hosting a special party – happy birthday Doris!”.

Travel enthusiast Doris was born in Tottenham in 1921, before moving to Leigh-on-Sea, then Didsbury, eventually settling in Manchester. Doris worked in many different sectors throughout her life, including the coal mining industry. Training as a nursery nurse when she was 46 years old, Doris was one of the first groups of mature students to train at Fielden Park in Didsbury, and went on to work at Claremont Road Primary School in Moss Side.

Doris has always led an active life – she played tennis in her younger years, and also enjoyed swimming. She moved to Abney Court five years ago, and now enjoys sharing her Navy stories with fellow residents and actively taking part in the variety of activities that are on offer every day.

Abney Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
