Going for gold! Kingston Vale care home wins prestigious national award

Home achievement

A care home in Kingston Vale is celebrating after being praised for their sporting, social and leisure activities at a national award ceremony.

Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, brought home the award for the ‘Best for sporting, social or leisure activities’ category at the Care Home Awards, thanks to its ‘impressively tailored’ activities programme.

The judges recognised Sherwood Grange as ‘an innovative, creative home that empowers residents to live life without barriers’ and praised the lifestyle team, led by Kimberley Atkin, the home’s Lifestyle Coordinator, who has ‘evolved a flexible, dynamic activities programme that is impressively tailored to resident’s interests, backgrounds and identities’.

Sherwood Grange prides itself on its innovative and creative approach to redefining life in a care home. Currently rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, the home thoughtfully plans activities that build on the residents’ interests and past experiences.

When Lifestyle Coordinator, Kimberley Atkin, joined the home almost five years ago, she spent time getting to know the residents and discovered that many shared a passion for art. Consequently, Kimberley immediately set up a weekly art group for residents that has since seen residents enjoy workshops from local artists, enter national competitions, and regularly visit art exhibitions and theatre performances around London. The home has also hosted life drawing classes using professional life models and seen resident’s artwork recently exhibited at London’s OXO tower.

Rick Mayne, Home Manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “We are delighted to have won in the ‘Best for Sporting, Social or Leisure Activities’ category in the Care Home Awards."

“At Sherwood Grange, we regularly find opportunities to showcase the creativity of the residents and team through imaginative activities that provide memorable experiences for all involved. The team strives to enable residents to remain active, independent and to live fulfilling lives; whether that means supporting them to join in with arts and crafts, music sessions, baking or gentle exercise classes."

“This award is testament to the lifestyle team’s hard work led by our fabulous Lifestyle Coordinator, Kimberley Atkin, whose innovative thinking ensures every resident leads a happy and fulfilling life. Residents are at the heart of everything we do, and I’m very proud of the activities and creative experiences we create here at Sherwood Grange.”

Sherwood Grange has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The ‘Outstanding’-rated, state-of-the-art care home features a cinema, hair salon and art studio, and incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room, to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
