It’s a bug’s life! Cheadle care home hosts forest school for local children

Home news

Residents at a care home in Cheadle were joined by local nursery children for a unique morning of autumnal fun.

The team at Care UK’s Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, organised a special session where Kids Go Wild Forest School’s pupils and the residents put their arts and crafts skills to the test.

The children and residents worked together to assemble the bug hotel. Everyone made use of the natural resources in the home’s garden as well as recycled materials, including planks of wood, twigs and pebbles – decorated with colourful leaves and pinecones.

Residents and children enjoyed experiencing the hands-on nature session, getting up close to the creepy crawlies and being creative with the materials around them to build the five-star bug hotel.

Rosemary, a resident at Abney Court, said: "I loved asking the children all about which insects the bug hotel would attract. The best part of the day was seeing the children all enjoy themselves.”

Amcia Hara, Home Manager at Abney Court, said: “We all enjoyed a wonderful morning creating a new home for all the weird and wonderful insects in the home’s garden.

“Here at Abney Court, we are always seeking new and exciting activities for residents to enjoy. Being in an outdoor setting and interacting with nature has proven to be incredibly beneficial for older people, as it can often prompt conversations and have a calming effect.

“It was so lovely to welcome the children into the home and enlist their help in creating the perfect habitat for the insects, and seeing residents getting involved was wonderful – thank you again for visiting Kids Go Wild Forest School!”

Abney Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
