Worcester care home up for national award

Home news

A care home in Worcester is celebrating after being named a finalist in the Care Home Awards 2023.

Care UK’s Perry Manor, on Charles Hastings Way, has been shortlisted for the ‘Best for Specialist Care’ category, which celebrates the efforts of a care home using tailored healthcare solutions to ensure residents’ specific needs are met.

The Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery.

The team at Perry Manor has been recognised for their person-centred approach and commitment to going above and beyond to provide residential, respite and dementia care.

The home works closely with the local ICB (Integrated Care Board) and identified a need in the community for specialist care, and launched a brand-new, high-needs suite to meet the care needs of the region. With space for 14 residents, the Malvern Suite provides specialist one-to-one care for people with complex neurological conditions, including dementia.

Local people in Worcestershire with complex needs can now remain close to their family who can be actively involved in their care. The suite is a home-from-home setting where residents feel safe, understood, and are uniquely cared for by a passionate and skilled team.

The service’s ethos is underpinned by the choice to only admit one new resident at a time every three weeks, as this enables the team to focus on the new resident as they settle in, while maintaining the wellbeing of other residents. As a result, the home has developed a reputation for deeply person-centred care.

Suite Manager, Donna White, who was awarded ‘The Dementia Carer Award’ in the Worcestershire Health and Social Care Awards in 2022, is a crucial part of the management team at Perry Manor and keeps the complex dementia suite operating smoothly.

Donna runs a monthly open clinical supervision session for the nurses and care team for everyone to discuss issues and challenges, working together to find solutions. Donna’s reputation as dementia expert also means that her opinion is respected within the wider community, as she regularly arranges training sessions for local services including the fire brigade, police and social services.

One relative commented: “Since his [my husband’s] admission to the Malvern Suite, Donna and the service have given us the opportunity to find a new way of being. A new way to communicate and a new way to find joy in our relationship. I am once again his wife, albeit in a different guise, I am back where I belong, by his side helping him live well in his new way of life.”

Katherine Matthews, Home Manager at Perry Manor, added: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for ‘Best for Specialist Care’ category at this years’ Care Home Awards.

“By addressing the vital need for a local service to care for people with neurological challenges, we are helping families stay closer together while loved ones receive the care they need from specialist team members and are supported to live a happy and fulfilled life.

“I am incredibly proud of all we have achieved since opening the doors to the Malvern Suite. We look forward to seeing how this unique suite continues to enhance life here at Perry Manor. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a win at the awards!”

Winners will be announced at the Care Home Awards ceremony in June.
