Local care home resident reveals secret to long life on 102nd birthday

Home news

A resident at a care home in Cardiff celebrated her 102nd birthday and shared the secret to a long and happy life.

A very special birthday party took place at Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed, on Cyncoed Road, when resident Sybil Phillips celebrated her 102nd birthday in style. She also revealed her secret to longevity, which is “having a positive outlook on life, being a little mischievous and having fun!’

To mark the big day, the team decorated the home’s café with balloons and banners, Sybil’s family and friends all came along, and the home’s chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy.

During the celebrations, Sybil said: “All I can say is that I love you all!”

Sybil was born on 11th January 1921 in Cwmfelinfach, near Newport. She moved to Cardiff in 1945 where she has lived ever since. Sybil’s best friend also moved to Cardiff at this time, and they created a large group of friends who all enjoyed socialising

She met her husband Samuel in 1945 and they were married in within six weeks of meeting. They had two daughters together Jackie and Michelle. Sybil now has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who celebrated her special day with her.

In her younger years, Sybil trained to become a hairdresser and her husband had a salon in Cardiff which they ran together.

Virgil Frincu, General Manager at Llys Cyncoed, said: “Sybil is a beloved resident at Llys Cyncoed, and it was a pleasure to help her celebrate this tremendous milestone.

“Everything we do centres around helping residents to live fulfilling lives, which is why we are always eager to mark special occasions. Sybil’s 102nd birthday was no exception, and it was a delight to raise a glass in her honour!"

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Llys Cyncoed incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
