Salisbury care home launches veterans lunch club

A care home in Salisbury that has been recognised for its high standards of person-centred care for veterans has introduced a new monthly event.

Care UK’s Salisbury Manor, on Shapland Close, invited the community to its first free veterans lunch club as it welcomed Hounds for Heroes as special guests.

The charity, which provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled people who are serving or have served in the armed forces or emergency services, helped mark the launch with a talk about their organisation and a meet-and-greet with furry friend Tilly.

The club will continue to run on the fourth Tuesday of every month and has been accredited by the Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Clubs.

At the events, guests can learn more about how the team supports veterans over a ploughman’s lunch specially prepared by the home’s head chef.

Tracey Pearce, Home Manager at Salisbury Manor, said: “We’re so proud to have launched the veterans club at the home. Many residents here are veterans themselves, so it is lovely to be able to set up this initiative in their honour.

“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Hounds for Heroes for joining us for the launch; their work is truly inspiring. We look forward to welcoming veterans from across Salisbury to our monthly gatherings moving forward.”

Salisbury Manor also holds Veteran Friendly Framework status. To achieve this, the home was required to meet eight standards, including noting armed forces status within care plans, addressing social isolation and signposting to support services, such as its local Royal British Legion branch along with other charities that provide support for veterans or partners of veterans.

The next veterans club event will be taking place on Tuesday 23rd September at 2.30pm.

Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, Salisbury Manor incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, and includes its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and café. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
