Bury care home resident turns 100 in style

There were smiles all around at a care home in Bury St Edmunds as one resident marked her centenarian status.

Nora Mary Colwell, who lives at Care UK’s Glastonbury Court on Glastonbury Road, celebrated her 100th birthday with loved ones, fellow residents and team members.

The party included a live entertainer, Gary Bland performing all of Frank Sinatra’s classics – at Nora’s request – followed by an elegant champagne afternoon tea.

She was also delighted to receive a signed Ipswich Town shirt, a nod to the football club she has supported throughout her life.

Nora said: “I can’t believe I am actually 100! I had such a great time at my parties, my family and my Glastonbury Family did me so proud.”

Nora grew up in Fornham St Genevieve before marrying Donald Colwell when she was 22. The couple enjoyed a long and happy marriage, travelling together across the UK before Donald’s passing in 2016. They set up home on the Mildenhall Road estate, where Nora became known for her exceptional cooking, keen gardening skills and warm hospitality.

Nora and Donald raised one son, John, who is married to Jane. Nora is also a proud grandmother to Matthew and Ben, and great-grandmother to Sophia and Charlotte.

When asked for her secret to a long and rewarding life, Nora said: “Good food, a great marriage and a happy family.”

Nora’s 100th birthday marks her induction into Care UK’s newly launched Centenarian Club, which celebrates and honours residents who have reached triple figures.

Ana Mihai, Home Manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “It was an absolute joy to celebrate Nora’s birthday and it was wonderful to see her surrounded by family and friends.

“Here at the home, we’re committed to helping residents lead active and fulfilling lives, so we love to mark incredible milestones – and Nora’s 100th birthday was no exception!

“Although she moved to Glastonbury Court due to reduced mobility, Nora continues to shine socially and mentally, enjoying conversations, activities and strong family connections. It was lovely to raise a glass of bubbles with her and her family.”

Glastonbury Court is a modern care home providing full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. It has its very own cinema, hair and beauty salon and pub, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
