Chester care home welcomes community for festive fun with a nostalgic twist

A care home in Chester is embracing the yuletide season by opening its doors for a special reminiscence event.

Care UK’s Deewater Grange on Chester Road is inviting people to revisit traditions from Christmas past by joining residents and team members for its event on Thursday 18th December from 5pm-7pm.

The event is part of Care UK’s “Step into Christmas” initiative, which aims to rekindle Christmas customs that residents remember from their childhood by reliving them and sharing them with the local community.

On the day, Deewater Grange will be hosting a vintage-themed fair, complete with classic festive foods and performances from the community carol, perfect to get guests into the festive spirit.

During the event, guests will have the opportunity to browse a host of craft stalls, featuring jewellery, dried flower arrangements and preserves. Younger visitors will also be able to explore Santa’s grotto, specially decorated by the home team, who will be wearing their best vintage outfits.

Resident Edna Parr said: “I fondly remember getting together with my family at Christmas. I used to love the smell of cooking. A turkey was a treat back then because it wasn’t something we often had. The smell of mice pies always made the celebrations feel so special, too.”

Resident Pauline Corner added: “I’m really looking forward to the vintage-themed fair with my friends and family and to bringing cherished traditions back to life."

Donna Howard, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “We’re thrilled to be hosting a vintage Christmas fair that brings the golden era back to life.

“The residents here have been sharing memories of festive celebrations from their youth and we can’t wait to recreate that magic with the wider community.

“From vintage decorations to classic carols and treats, it is set to be an event to remember and we encourage the people of Chester to come along and party with us!”
