Old festive traditions came to life at a care home in Littlehampton, where residents welcomed the local community for a day of seasonal activities.
Care UK’s Darlington Court, on The Leas off Station Road, joined forces with the local community to revisit customs from Christmas past.
The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Step into Christmas’ initiative, which aims to revive residents’ festive traditions, encouraging them to share memories with the Littlehampton community.
By blending storytelling, crafts and carol singing, the event created a space for meaningful connection with the care home’s neighbours.
On the day, residents and community members had them-elves a crafty afternoon. Armed with scissors, glue and seasonal inspiration, the group created an array of Christmas cards to send out to their friends, family and neighbours.
Frank, a resident's husband, said: “I enjoyed seeing everyone create something unique, the room felt full of tradition, laughter and memories. It felt like stepping back in time, reminding me of what my grandparents used to do.”
Lukasz Wojciechowski, Home Manager at Darlington Court, said: “Christmas is such a special time of year, and this event allowed us to honour those cherished memories from residents’ childhoods of making Christmas cards.
“This event was a wonderful opportunity to bring the local community together for a day of festive cheer. It was truly heartwarming to watch residents reminisce and share stories from Christmases gone by.
“We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Littlehampton community for joining us and making the day so joyous for all involved! Their presence brought an extra sparkle to the day.”
Darlington Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
