A 101-year-old resident at a care home in Stratford-upon-Avon has marked her birthday by giving advice for leading a long and happy life.
Joyce Boland, who lives at Care UK’s Ambleside on Evesham Road in Dodwell, celebrated the latest milestone of her centenarian status with a special party including a birthday cake, decorations and music organised by the care home team.
She was thrilled to be surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren and fellow residents as they came together to mark her momentous day – and she even passed on some of her wisdom.

When asked for her secret to living a long and rewarding life, Joyce attributed her longevity to “not smoking” and “everything in moderation” as she raised a glass of sherry.
Joyce grew up in Liverpool with her parents, brother and two sisters. At 17 years old, she joined the army as a driver and was responsible for transporting senior generals. One of the highlights of her service in the second world war was driving US President Franklin D Roosevelt.
During her time in the forces, she met her husband, Oliver, a Glider Pilot. At just 22, Oliver flew Glider No. 92 in the coup‑de‑main force to Pegasus Bridge in Normandy – a pivotal mission that helped secure the bridge for Allied operations.
The couple married in September 1944 and went on to raise four daughters. Joyce devoted herself to family life, later volunteering with Meals on Wheels and even running a shop inside Long Lartin prison. She has 11 grandchildren and four great‑grandchildren, who remain a central joy in her life.
Joyce has always been known for her practical skills and creativity. A keen gardener, she still enjoys spending time outdoors when possible. She was also handy with DIY projects, often tackling jobs around the house herself, and has a lifelong love of art and music.
After living in Welford‑on‑Avon and other areas of Warwickshire, Joyce moved to Ambleside when she could no longer live alone, choosing the home for its closeness to friends and family.
Charlotte Levin, Home Manager at Ambleside, said: “Celebrating Joyce’s 101st birthday was special for everyone here. She has such a remarkable life story and it was wonderful to see her surrounded by family on her big day.
“Everything we do centres around supporting residents to live happy and fulfilling lives, which is why we are always eager to mark special occasions. Joyce brings so much character and joy to our home and honouring this milestone together was a privilege.”
Ambleside is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The building boasts its very own cinema, café and hair and beauty salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
