Harrow resident steps into the spotlight as chat show host

A resident at a care home in Harrow has stepped outside her comfort zone in spectacular fashion by transforming into Claudia Winkleman and hosting her very own talk show.

Gay Wilsmore, who is 82 and lives at Care UK’s Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill, took centre stage after telling the team she fancied trying “something completely different and fun”. 

Gay, who describes herself as naturally introverted, had never imagined hosting a talk show but felt that taking on a character would give her the confidence to try something new.

“By becoming someone else for the day, I could express a different side of myself,” she said.

“It helped me find my voice in a way I didn’t expect.”

Her transformation into Claudia was complete with the signature black outfit and, of course, the iconic fringe.

Laughing as she adjusted her wig, Gay joked: “How does Claudia manage with this fringe? I can’t see a thing!”

She even teased the team, adding: “Am I doing this because you can’t afford the real Claudia?”

The talk show, hosted in the home’s lounge, featured a panel of special guests including Home Manager Laurentiu Iordachescu, nurse Urmila Jaisi and Gay’s best friend and fellow resident Lynda Hatfield.

They discussed life and careers within a care home, sharing stories, reflections and the moments that shape their day‑to‑day roles.

The activity was part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to put their dreams forward, allowing them to reconnect with a past hobby or try something completely new. From flying a plane to enjoying a fish and chip supper, no wish is too big or small for the team to try to grant.

Laurentiu said: “We’re always looking for ways to help residents express themselves and discover new strengths. 

“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to share their passions and ambitions, and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these a reality. 

“Gay embraced this opportunity with such humour and courage. Watching her step into character and lead a panel with confidence was incredibly inspiring for all of us.”

Buchanan Court provides full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, the home has its very own cinema room, pub and hair and beauty salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
