Aberdeen care home residents team up for matchday magic

Football fever has officially kicked off at a care home in Aberdeen as residents teamed up for a day of sporting fun. 

Care UK’s Tor-Na-Dee, on North Deeside Road in Milltimber, took part in football-themed activities and joined the nation in celebrating a huge summer of sport. 

To start, residents got their creative juices flowing as they designed footballs and Scottish flags using coloured cards and straws, while recalling fond football memories. 

Team members then set up an inflatable goal, giving residents the chance to put their best foot forward and take their shot at scoring past them.

Resident Douglas Merson said: “I really enjoyed playing the games as I loved playing football in my younger years.”

The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Goal-den Moments' initiative, which aims to bring generations together and encourage residents to reminisce about cherished football memories while sharing new experiences.

Sue Jones-Wood, Home Manager at Tor-Na-Dee, said: “We had a fantastic time bringing residents together to celebrate the start of a massive summer of sport. We know how powerful sport can be in uniting people, with football in particular holding a special place in the hearts of many of our residents.

“This event has been a wonderful way to get creative, offering numerous therapeutic benefits for older people – particularly those living with dementia. What better way to round off a day of crafts than with a penalty shootout? Well done to Douglas for scoring a great goal!
