Edinburgh centenarian resident shares secret to longevity

There were plenty of smiles and slices of cake at a care home in Edinburgh when one resident celebrated a milestone birthday.

Sister Nan, a resident at Care UK’s Lauder Lodge, on Wakefield Avenue, marked her newly centenarian status in style, surrounded by loved ones.

The team members decorated the home with a special birthday display made up of cards, balloons and banners. The 100-year-old also enjoyed cupcakes prepared by the home’s head chef, alongside her fellow residents, family and friends.

Born in Acharacle, Sister Nan joined the Society of the Sacred Heart in Dublin in 1948. She spent many years teaching in Aberdeen, Dublin and Omagh, alongside her best friend, Sister Delores Considine.

Together they were involved in several neighbourhood projects and undertook voluntary work in community education in both Omagh and later in Edinburgh.

Growing up, Sister Nan spent her free time reading, with favourites including the Agatha Raisin books. She also studied and achieved degrees in both Greek and Latin. She has always enjoyed the company of others and remains devoted to her faith, keeping those around her in her thoughts and prayers.

When asked about her secret to living a long and happy life, Sister Nan said: “Enjoy all that life offers and more. Always move onwards together with the care of God.”

Sister Nan moved to Lauder Lodge in November 2024 alongside eight of her other sisters.

“Sister Nan is a cherished member of the Lauder Lodge community, and it was wonderful to see her surrounded by family and friends as we marked this special day. Since moving in with her sisters, they have created a wonderful community at the home, which extends to fellow residents.

“Her positive outlook has always been an inspiration to everyone here. Here’s to Sister Nan!”

Lauder Lodge is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care. It has its own cinema room, pub and hairdressing salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
