Grimsby centenarian resident shares secret to longevity

A Grimsby care home resident has credited his longevity to “three glasses of wine a week” as he celebrated a very special milestone.

Douglas Huke, a resident at Care UK’s Old Norse Lodge, on Matthew Telford Park, celebrated his 101st birthday with an intimate party at the home.

To mark the milestone, team members decorated the home with a special birthday display made up of balloons and banners. Staying true to his secret to a long life, the centenarian enjoyed a celebratory glass of wine alongside his fellow residents and friends.

Douglas was born on 1st August 1925 in Middlesborough, before moving to London aged just one, where he spent his early years. His academic career then took him to Birmingham, where he began a successful career as a Research Chemist for Dunlop, before eventually settling in Grimsby as a Lecturer of Chemistry at Grimsby University.

A true academic, Douglas is passionate about writing and sharing his knowledge, having published over 20 books over the years.

When asked about his secret to living a long and happy life, Douglas replied: “Enjoying three glasses of wine a week – while maintaining good health of course!”

Rachael Smith, Home Manager at Old Norse Lodge, said: “Douglas joined us recently here at Old Norse Lodge and has already become a much-loved resident.

“We’re committed to helping residents live fulfilling lives, which is why we love to celebrate big milestones – and Douglas 101st birthday is a huge milestone indeed and certainly called for a glass of wine and bubbles to toast the special occasion.”

“We’d like to wish Douglas a very happy birthday once again and look forward to celebrating many more milestones together!”

Old Norse Lodge is a state-of-the-art care home that provides residential and dementia care on a permanent and respite basis. Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, the care home also offers its very own café, cinema room and hair salon as well as plenty of space for relaxation and recreation.
