Knutsford care home residents wow with exhibition

A Knutsford care home hosted its very own art exhibition – featuring work created by residents.

Care UK’s Cranford Grange, on Hall Lane in Mobberley, was transformed into a mini gallery for the occasion, with residents proudly displaying their colourful and creative works in celebration of National Day of Arts in Care Homes.

Among the artists featured were residents Eileen MacKay, 88, Pam Cowburn, 84, Basil Mortley, 97 and Mavis Parr, 97, with each piece offering a glimpse into their individual interests and memories. 

Pam said: “Painting and drawing mean the world to me, so I was absolutely delighted to be placed in the top four. I have always loved visiting the coast and spending time by the sea, and I drew inspiration from that passion when creating my artwork. 

“The beautiful blue tones of the sea complement the bright sky, while the contrasting brown pathway brings balance and depth to the piece. It was such a special experience to have my husband and daughter by my side to enjoy the afternoon, and I was proud to share my finished artwork with the local community.”

Basil added: “I started painting when I was 60 after my triple heart bypass operation. As an engineer, I never thought I’d be any good at it, but to my surprise, I enjoyed it so much. It played a big part in my recovery, and now, at 97, I still paint regularly. It brings me so much pleasure and happiness." 

On the day, residents guided visitors through the gallery, sharing the inspiration behind their artwork and the stories behind each piece. Guests were also treated to a selection of cheese and wine prepared by the head chef.

Mavis said: “I have always loved drawing and find great joy in creating artwork inspired by nature, such as flowers and plants. I was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase my talent and share my passion for art with others.”

Eileen created the winning painting and has enjoyed drawing since she was a young child. She said: “I just love to draw anything. It brings me so much pleasure. Participating in the art exhibition has brought so many fond memories back to life again.” 

For their hard work, residents who displayed a piece of artwork received a National Activity Providers Association certificate in recognition of their contribution.

Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Cranford Grange, said: “The art exhibition was a huge success; residents loved showcasing their skills. 

"Creative activities can be a great way for residents to express themselves and share something meaningful to them, and the exhibition was a great way to celebrate that. 

“Everyone was blown away by the talent on display, and it was fantastic to see the residents telling visitors all about the inspiration behind their work. It was a truly special afternoon.”

Cranford Grange provides residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, the home incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The building includes its own cinema, pub and hair and beauty salon, and has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage interaction among the residents.
