Former lorry driver surprised with HGV visit

A care home resident took a ride down memory lane when a lorry drove up to the home's door.

Care UK’s Barton Manor, on Barton Road, was treated to a visit from the HGV lorry as part of a special initiative designed to make residents’ dreams come true.

Joe White, 98, had previously shared with the team that, in his younger years, he had driven all types of lorries and tractors, but never an HGV. Determined to make his wish a reality, the team got to work arranging for a HGV from Ford and Slater DAF Dealership Wisbech to visit the home as a special surprise.

Joe was part of the army in his younger years, as a clean-up crew member in the Royal Artillery. During this time, he was often tasked with driving lorries and tractors, through which he developed a keen interest in lorries.

On the day of the visit, Lee Walton from the local dealership presented Joe with a special driver’s hat and a miniature lorry, which has now taken pride of place in his room.

Joe said: “It was very interesting – and shocking – to see just how much lorries have changed since my days!”

Joe’s experience was made possible thanks to Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to suggest ideas for new hobbies they’d like to try, places they’d like to visit or even activities linked to past careers. From skiing to a fish and chip supper, the programme is designed to help residents lead fulfilling lives.

Andrea Layton, Home Manager at Barton Manor, said: “Seeing Joe’s face light up when the HGV arrived at the home, was fantastic. His smile throughout the experience was incredibly special for everyone involved.

“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to divulge their ambitions, and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these a reality. Lorries were something he has always been passionate about, and we wanted to make sure he could experience that excitement again in a safe and meaningful way.

“The whole day was unforgettable, and it was wonderful to see Joe enjoying every moment.”

Barton Manor is a state-of-the-art care home that provides residential and dementia care on a permanent and respite basis. Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, the care home also offers its very own café, cinema room and hair salon as well as plenty of space for relaxation and recreation.
