From August 2018 we have removed one-off administration fees paid in advance of admission (which previously covered, amongst other things, the costs of initial care assessments, the installation of any specialist equipment needed and other one-off preparations for the arrival of a resident). We are also limiting any charges due after the death of a resident to a maximum of three days unless family members would like continued access to the room or need a longer period to remove personal possessions.
The revised fee structure will incorporate all one-off pre-admission costs into the normal weekly fee for care and is expected to fully meet the new guidance for residential care providers issued in draft form by the Competition and Markets Authority during the summer. Additional fees will still apply to a range of optional services, including private physiotherapy and hairdressing.
We believe that in setting out a clear set of guidelines specifically for the sector, the Competitions and Markets Authority will provide welcome clarity to prospective residents, and ensure consistency in charging practices in care homes. No guidance had previously existed regarding the options available to providers to recover one-off costs either on a one-off basis in advance of admission or via ongoing normal weekly fees.
By introducing changes in advance of the finalised guidance, Care UK is seeking to reduce any potential uncertainty for those families currently considering residential care.
We have consistently provided a high degree of transparency with regard to fees and, as far back as 2014, was one of the first providers to start publishing indicative fee levels for individual care homes.
Alongside the changes to the overall fee structure, the Care UK website now includes easily accessible sample contracts and an overview of how fees are made up, to give families the information needed to consider and make decisions about their potential care needs.
