Little Holland Hall care home has been announced as a joint winner of Care UK’s Great Christmas Cake Off competition, which is open to all Care UK homes and day centres on the countdown to Christmas.
Homes that participated in the competition were asked to get residents, visitors and staff involved in baking and decorating a Christmas cake. The judging criteria would include resident involvement, creativity and festiveness, and the presentation of each entry, which should include photographs and details of how the cake was made. There was no taste element to the judging though, so the cake could be enjoyed by everyone at the home!
Little Holland Hall scored highly in all categories, but particularly with involving the residents. As soon as the competition was announced residents gathered to talk over what they could do and no one was left out of sharing their ideas. Once everyone had agreed on a design, the chef was asked to gather all the ingredients together in a large bowl ready for everyone to take their turn at stirring the mixture, and make their wish! Then the sherry was added and the mixture went back to the kitchen for baking. Residents also enjoyed taking part in making the decorations to go on top of the iced cake.
In addition to the residents being very involved, the entry scored highly on creativity and festiveness. Extra points were scored for not giving up when the gingerbread house, the centrepiece to their decoration, fell apart! When everyone pulled together, a solution was found and the final cake looked very festive.
