Kate Smith

Home Manager

Kate Smith

As home manager, the most important part of my role is to ensure residents are living their best life every day.

I am so proud of what we do here, knowing that residents receive the very highest standards of care.

Before coming to Woodland Court, I was a home manager at another care home. I love being part of the Care UK team as it is an organisation that genuinely supports colleagues and wants the best for residents. All my training has been completed through Care UK, and I have NVQ levels 2, 3 and 4.

In this position, you need to be approachable and understanding to support residents and their families. It is also important to me that colleagues feel supported and that they have a good work-life balance. In my previous role, we achieved an outstanding rating for internal governance which was incredibly rewarding as it showed our rigorous approach to compliance and effective management.

My favourite part of the day is arriving at Woodland Court and catching up with the night team. I also enjoy setting up the morning meeting where we go through plans and find out how residents are feeling.

Outside of work, I spend my time with my husband and daughter and spending as much time in the sun as possible.

Charley Woolsey
Charley Woolsey
Deputy Manager

I have a level three NVQ in health and social care and was previously a unit manager here. I am also studying health and social care with the Open University.

In this role, you need to have good leadership skills, but also be patient, organised and be a good communicator. Working in care also means you have to have empathy.

The most important part of what I do, is making sure that every resident receives compassionate person-centred care. I feel proud that I can contribute to making Woodland Court a caring, happy and safe environment for residents; while also supporting colleagues to deliver safe high-quality care.

I love the time I can spend with residents. Being able to see the positive difference we make and seeing them live fulfilling lives is so rewarding. Being able to chat with residents also means they feel heard – their care and wellbeing are our priorities.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also care for my nan. I enjoy watching football too.

Lifestyle Lead

I was previously a lifestyle coordinator here at Woodland Court; being promoted to lifestyle lead has been such a highlight for me.

I’ve completed several training courses, including dementia care, safeguarding, first-aid and even social media training which is specific to my role.

Working in care means you need to be caring and patient. As lifestyle lead, you also need to be creative, enthusiastic and have good communication skills. It is also important to make sure every resident feels valued; it helps to find out their likes and dislikes, so we can make sure there’s an activity or event for everyone.

I find bringing residents and the local community together really rewarding, but it’s also a vital part of what we do and helps everyone to feel connected.

One of the things I feel really proud of is seeing residents build new friendships and gain confidence. It’s great when you find activities that everyone enjoys. I like to say that while activities sometimes bring back happy memories, they always help create new ones.

I like to spend my spare time with family, friends and my puppy. You’ll also always find me at a Harry Styles concert!

Head Chef

I have a level two qualification in modified diets and a level three in food hygiene and safety, as well as catering and hospitality.

As head chef, you need to be passionate about food and be able to work calmly under pressure. I think it is also important to set clear and high standards and lead by example, so communication is essential too.

My favourite part of the day is mealtimes and being able to see residents enjoying the food first hand. A big part of what we do is making sure residents’ dietary needs are met and, in some cases, that means helping residents put on a little weight. It’s rewarding knowing that we make such a positive difference to the health of residents.

I also really enjoy supporting other members of the team and seeing them work to their full potential.

I’ve had some lovely career highlights over the years. One was winning Care Catering Magazine’s Chef of the Year 2022 award. I also joined the National Association of Care Catering and have been taking part in some of their podcasts which has been great fun.

Outside of work family time is really important to me.

Business Administrator

Before becoming business administrator, I was a senior carer here at Woodland Court. Knowing residents and colleagues already has given me a great start and I’ve been able to bring all my knowledge with me in this role.

I am enjoying my new position here and still get to spend time with residents, which is one of the best parts of the job. It is also rewarding to be able to help residents and their families with any queries they may have and also being able to support colleagues.

As business administrator, you need to be organised and be able to prioritise tasks. We deal with a lot of enquiries, especially from relatives so it is also important to be patient and understanding.

Outside of work I am always busy spending my time with my family.

Head Housekeeper

The most important part of my role as head housekeeper is to make sure residents feel safe and comfortable, and that Woodland Court is kept to a high standard of cleanliness. To provide that, I’ve had training in Infection Prevention Control (IPC) and was also made an IPC champion at the home.

In this role, you need to have a good work ethic. Working in a care environment also means you need to have compassion and understand that for residents, this is their home and should be maintained to the highest standards possible.

When I am not working, I’m socialising with family and friends and enjoying beach walks with my dog.

Carers

Our hardworking teams always keep individuals and their families at the heart of the care they provide. Nurses

The nurses at Care UK are highly skilled and receive sector-leading training, which enables them to keep developing expertise in different clinical fields from dementia to palliative care.
