Hip patient finds she can play table tennis

Company news

Judith from Hucknall near Nottingham, had been attending a pain management course to try and help her to cope with the agony of a painful hip joint.  This course is designed to help patients so that they do not need to have surgery.  Following completion of the course, Judith carried out the prescribed exercises for six months, but unfortunately her hip didn’t get any better and her GP decided that the time had come for a hip replacement.

Following her initial referral and tests, Judith was offered a choice of hospitals to choose from for surgery but only one offered a waiting time of just two to four weeks so she decided to find out more about Barlborough hospital.

Judith’s husband visited Barlborough and he really liked it so they decided to choose this as the venue for her operation.

Judith’s husband took her to the Treatment Centre for her operation and she chose to use the centre’s own transport to take her home as she didn’t want to risk normal transport and felt that being cared for professionally would be a better option.

Judith said: “Funnily enough I felt like a guest at Barlborough. Everyone was kind and friendly.  Everything was thought of.  My visitors had their own seats, having no flowers is a good rule as you don’t want to risk infection.  I recently received the patient newsletter and found out about things that I could do, like using an exercise bike.”

Judith is now going to start using her exercise bike, and playing table tennis following advice in a recent Barlborough hospital newsletter.

Judith is a keen member of the local group of the Women’s Institute and two fellow members have also had procedures at Barlborough. They all recommend it to friends and Judith reports that a fellow WI member commented: “With you three going to Barlborough…I feel as I though I want to go too!”
