More than 500 past and prospective patients, members of the public and local MP’s came along and enjoyed tours around operating theatres and took part in mini health checks. Consultants were on hand to talk about their work and children were treated to face painting and other games.
The organisers from Care UK could hardly believe their eyes when they realised that there was a long queue of people patiently waiting for the doors to open at 10am People had travelled from as far afield as Derby, Doncaster, Spalding, Bassetlaw and Nottingham for their peep behind the scenes at this much-loved NHS hospital.
Graeme Kendall, Manager at Care UK’s Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre said: “It was amazing to meet so many friendly faces attending our Open Day; people were very complimentary about the service we provide. The guided tours around theatre were so unbelievably successful that we had to add extra slots in order for everyone to have a look. The kids got involved in fun and games, some with an educational aspect with Andy the skeleton. I'm sure all of my colleagues will join me in saying a huge thank you to everyone who came along.”
Staff were particularly pleased to see a number of people who had been told by their GP that they need an operation but were too nervous to actually book a date. Visiting Barlborough gave them an opportunity to find out more and to talk to patients who had already undergone a similar procedure or to meet the clinical staff who would look after them. Graeme Kendall continued: “We met a number of visitors who were really nervous about the prospect of an operation but, having seen the site and talked to patients and staff, now feel more confident about going ahead.”
After such an influx of visitors, Care UK staff worked to scrupulously clean every square inch of the hospital to make sure that it was ready to accept new patients Monday morning. Care UK prides itself on its extremely low infection rates and has never had a case of hospital acquired MRSA or C.difficile.
