First-hand account helps to ease concerns

Company news

Age Concern in Lincoln is putting people who need a joint replacement at ease by publishing a series of real life feature articles in its monthly newsletter.

A retired employee of Argos for over 17 years, 62 year old Viv Rowley of North Hykeham decided to write accounts of her treatment for the newsletter as she knows how people can be scared, apprehensive and even delay having vital treatment.

Viv has been a patient twice at Care UK’s Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre; she had a hand procedure in April 2009 and then a knee replacement in December 2009.  She hadn’t previously heard of the Centre so when she was offered a choice of three hospitals she carried out some research and opted for Barlborough.

Viv is now recovering well and she credits the skills of the team at Barlborough that cared for her and her own dedication to the physiotherapy that she is continuing with.  With the on-going support from Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre and her own determination, Viv has already made a start on getting back to tend to her beloved garden, a hobby she was unable to carry out before her surgery.  The second instalment of Viv’s experience has just appeared in the April edition of Age Concerns newsletter which is currently being distributed in and around Lincoln.
Graeme Kendall, Manager at Care UK’s Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre said: “It’s so great to see NHS patients helping others, obviously any surgery can be a worrying prospect so having a first-hand account is genuinely very useful to prospective patients.  I do hope that her articles encourage other people who think that knee problems mean the end of an active lifestyle to think again.  And it’s fantastic news that Viv is now enjoying tending her garden again.”
