Reports about poor patient care and neglect of elderly people in hospital have filled the national media in recent weeks with dignity being a hot topic of discussion. Whilst some hospitals have received negative feedback for their work in providing dignified care, Barlborough has continually scored highly with patients in this area with satisfaction towards privacy and dignity topping 97 per cent and above.
“Our success has very much been down to listening to our patients,” explains Barlborough’s Clinical Services Manager, Sandra Swarbrook. “We listen and act upon individual patient feedback but also through our patient forum group which consists of past patients who work closely with the hospital management team to further improve standards of care. Despite the good results, we can never get complacent so celebrating events such as ‘Dignity Action Day’ provides us with another great opportunity to focus everyone’s attention on an issue that’s become vitally important to patients in recent times.”
Barlborough plans to celebrate the day with a range of exciting activities including mini-pampering sessions and a special lunch menu for patients. Staff will be able to take part in a quiz to test their knowledge on dignity and patient rights as well as enjoy a special team buffet. Information displays and food tasting demos will also feature around the hospital and in the outpatient department.
Sandra concludes: “As an orthopaedic hospital that mainly carries out hip and knee replacements, we tend to see more of an elderly, and sometimes more vulnerable, group of patients who may not fully understand their rights to dignity and respect when receiving health and social care. By supporting ‘Dignity Action Day’ and showing what high level of care and dignity our team provides on a daily basis, we hope that our patients and staff will learn a little with a bit of fun along the way.”
We are happy to arrange interviews with a range of experts, commentary on industry issues and site visits for filming, photography or sound recording. Please get in touch with your requirements and we will do our best to arrange a suitable response.
