Clara Court’s training success benefits residents with dementia

Home news

Residents at Clara Court, Care UK’s specialist home for older people with dementia, are reaping the benefits of new training undertaken by staff at the 76-bed home in Courthouse Road, Maidenhead.

Six staff have successfully completed the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) certificate in dementia. The City and Guilds training includes understanding the process and experience of dementia, communication, person-centred administration of medication and diversity and individuality.

The staff will now become champions within the home, sharing their new training and helping members of staff to deliver the best possible specialist dementia care to residents.

Manager Leigh Reid: “This is not a home of 76 residents, it is home to 76 individuals, who all have their own dreams, likes and dislikes. Our job is to ensure we really know each individual. That way we can genuinely care for them rather than just look after them.”

Leigh spent 10 years as a senior lecturer in health and social care at Thames Valley University and he is deeply committed to training, knowing that the residents will benefit from the improvements.

Now staff at Clara Court will be the first to receive brand new training, as 20 of them take part in an exciting new pilot designed to help them be more productive in the help they give to residents (Managing Productivity and Wellbeing).

Leigh said: “This new training will help them provide the right level of support for each resident so they continue to have the very best possible quality of life.”
