Coffee morning fun, pantos and parties help Sunderland care home residents celebrate Christmas

Home news

Residents at Care UK’s Grangewood care home, Sunderland, are making paper chains and decorations, in preparation for a fun-packed Christmas holiday, including a coffee morning which is open to the public on Saturday 3rd December.

The fun starts at the Shiney Row home at 10am and runs until noon - Santa and his little helpers will be on hand to ensure everyone has lots of festive fun. As well as being able to visit Santa in his grotto, visitors will also be able to take part in raffles and tombolas and get ahead with their shopping at the many stalls, which will includes clothing and old-fashioned sweets.

The Christmas entertainment continues when residents visit South Shields to see Dick Whittington. Manager Susan Hodgson said: “The residents are really looking forward to the trip. They love the interactivity of the pantomimes and the shows bring back lots of fun-filled memories.

On Friday 19th December, residents, along with their relatives and friends, will be enjoying Grangewood’s Christmas party, with entertainment being provided by the staff and festive food from the home’s catering team.

Susan said: “I have a wonderful team here. They are dedicated to making sure our residents are happy and fulfilled. Many of the team have been here since the home opened in 2005 and that continuity of care means we offer our residents a very high level of care.”

The home provides care for 50 people in two wings, one of which offers specialist care for people with dementia.

Grangewood is one of 25 former Southern Cross care homes that have transferred to Care UK. The company is one of the top five providers of residential care and the leading independent provider for health and social care in the UK.

Nationally, the company’s residential care services division now operates 88 residential care homes and has a reputation for excellence, winning several prestigious national awards in 2011 for ground-breaking dementia care, the promotion of residents’ dignity and for health and social care investment.
