Durham Road street party brings Islington community together for Jubilee fun

Home news

Durham Road, Islington, will be filled with the sound of celebrations and steel drums as residents and the team at Lennox House join the community to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a street party on Friday 1st June.

Florence Clarke, the home’s manager and event organiser, has invited visitors to the Alsen Day Centre and the residents of the St Anne’s nursing home, both located in Durham Road, to join in the fun-packed multicultural celebration.

Florence said: “Everyone is very excited about the party. Our Activities Coordinators are working with residents to make bunting and banners to fill the street with red, white and blue.

“Celebrations are a wonderful way of talking about memories and changes. All of our residents remember the Coronation, no matter where they were – at home or abroad, whether because they lived in other countries or because they were doing their national service.

“The more we talk to residents about their past and their experiences, the more we understand them and we can tailor their care and activities to really suit them.”

As well as lots of food, the street party will include a steel band, music from the 1940s and 1950s, an Elvis-tribute singer and other entertainers.

Durham Road will be closed to traffic from 10am – 5pm with the party taking place between noon and 4pm.

Florence said: “All of the people taking part, whether from the Alsen Day Centre, St Anne’s or Lennox House have spent most, if not all, of their lives as members of the Islington community; what better way to celebrate the Jubilee than by coming together to raise a toast to the Queen?”
