Silversprings resident William Ward celebrated his 100th birthday last week surrounded by his family and friends.
William was born in London where he lived and worked until retiring to Weeley Heath over 25 years ago.
His first job after leaving school was repairing car radiators in Kings Cross after which he started a long career with Thorn Electrical Industries, manufacturers of gas cookers.
Now widowed, William was married to Hilda and they had two children together, Brian and Linda.
A keen footballer during his youth, William followed the fortunes of North London club Arsenal which somewhat confused his son Brian, "Dad would always take me to watch Spurs and it wasn't until several years later that I found out he supported Arsenal!"
"He also loved the horses, and followed the racing avidly."
William's daughter Linda also remembers another of his great past-times "Dad loved gardening and in particular growing roses. I remember him entering his prize blooms into competitions held at work which he often won!"
The staff at Silversprings care home in Thorrington helped William to welcome his children, four grandchildren and great grandson, also called William, to share in his special day complete with a fabulous lunch, balloons, presents and cards.
