Out-of-hours manager wins prestigious healthcare award

Carol Chew, from Calderdale out-of-hours service, based at the Horne Street Health Centre, in Halifax, has won a prestigious award for her contribution to developing the service that provides medical cover to people in the Halifax area.

Carol, who works for leading healthcare provider Care UK, was among the innovators recognised at the national Health Care Awards for finding new ways to improve services and standards for Care UK patients.

She said: “When I first joined the out-of-hours GP service some nine years ago, my one goal was to ensure that patients within the area received a first class service from a team who believed strongly in what they were delivering and who had total commitment to the community. This award is a great honour and shows that the team and I have gone a long way in achieving that goal.”

The Outstanding Contribution Award, which was one of eight different categories presented by Care UK’s chief executive Mike Parish, is for the person or team who provides outstanding service at all times. Carol, who is retiring soon, has led the team since Care UK took the service over, and has driven up standards, even in times of transition.

Service manager Fran Robinson said: “I have worked with Carol for a number of years and can honestly say that her total commitment and dedication to her team and to providing first class patient care has never changed. Carol is one of those rare individuals who are very passionate about what she does and her work is her life.  Carol will be greatly missed by her colleagues and I.”

The Health Care Awards were open to Care UK’s team of more than 2,900 staff who provided expert care and services to patients at GP practices, diagnostics services, NHS treatment centres, out-of-hours services and prisons across the country.

The Calderdale out-of-hours service provides advice, information and treatment for NHS patients who become unwell when their GP surgery is closed. For further information, visit https://www.careuk.com/calderdale-out-hours or call 01422 399858.
