Community gets together for a cuppa for dementia campaign

Home news

An Eastcote care home is inviting visitors to make time for a cuppa on Tuesday to support a national dementia awareness campaign.

Care UK’s Whitby Dene care home will be hosting a coffee morning as part of Dementia UK’s Time for a Cuppa week. Events are held around the country throughout the week to raise awareness and funds for Dementia UK.

On Monday, pupils from Field End School will get together with residents from the Whitby Road home to bake and decorate cakes.

Home Manager Matthew Bowden said: “Many of our residents have lived in the area all their lives and so we keep up as many community links as possible. The pupils are favourites with the residents and I can imagine they will have a great time creating cakes for the event.

“We also have members of the local Tudor Club baking for us, as well as relatives and friends, and we will also have entertainment provided on the afternoon by popular local group, the Good Companions.

“As well as the wonderful cakes and biscuits, there will also be information available on dementia, and our team members will be happy to talk about aspects of the condition with anyone who may know someone who needs support.”

To mark Time for a Cuppa week, Care UK, a leading provider of health and social care services throughout the country, commissioned an independent survey into the nation’s tea-drinking habits.

The survey found that people around the UK place great value on the benefits of meeting friends and family for a cuppa and to share news – a view shared by 72% of people in the London area.

Londoners also named The Duchess of Cambridge and Sir Winston Churchill as two famous names they would most like to share a cuppa with.

Sharing family news over a cuppa was also top choice for adults around the UK, with nearly 75% saying that over a cuppa was their favourite way to share family news and events and 51% of over 55s opting for their children as the favourite people to make time for a cuppa and a chat with.

The Time for a Cuppa event at Whitby Dene on Tuesday March 5 is open to all and runs from 2pm-4pm.
