Residents at Care UK’s Grangewood care home, in Houghton-le-Spring, are asking local artists to help them carry out a vision they have for their home.
The residents would like to have murals on the home’s walls reflecting their loves, interests and history. The themes they have chosen are entertainment icons of the 1950s and 60s, gardens and nature and working life for both men and women during the last century.
Home Manager Samantha Rogan said: “Our residents love a splash of colour and they told us they would love to see images from their past, such as mining and old-fashioned homes and housework and the film and rock stars of their youth.
“As well as being attractive we hope that the murals will help our residents with dementia to recall events from their past and help us to uncover more stories about their past and their interests.”
The home, in Chester Road, Shiney Row, has a strong sense of community.
Most residents and staff have lived in the area for many years and they would love to capture some of the local sights and faces.
They would like any artists or colleges interested in volunteering their skills to create the corridor murals to call 01913 790 324
