Bowes House ‘Fabulous Fifties’ Week

Home news

Bowes House held a ‘Fabulous Fifties’ week between Monday 11th and Friday 15th November. The themed week was packed with activities including music, games and a street party, and ended with a grand 1950s fashion show finale.

The week began with an entertainer, Tom Fitzpatrick; singing the songs of Matt Munro and Frank Sinatra to name a few and evoking many memories for all.

Entertainment also included a Beetle Drive, a Royals Quiz and even a sand castle building competition, which was held at the home’s coffee shop. Sand was brought in and each resident built a sandcastle using buckets and spades provided by their grand and great grandchildren. Each of these was decorated with flags. As all of the entries were so good, there was no outright winner and everyone was presented with a prize.

A company called Fine Floristry held a floral demonstration for residents. They were able to help build their own small floral arrangement in the design of a cupcake using flowers from the 1950’s, such as carnations and roses. Even the gentlemen joined in and sported the personalised button holes that were made for them. The demonstration included wedding pictures of the 1950s, which displayed the types of wedding flowers used at the time.

The residents then went on to enjoy a 1950’s ‘street party’ in the dining room at Bowes House, which overlooks the street. Typical party food was served and the room was decorated with union jack bunting and flags. The residents played party games and enjoyed the party.

To mark the end of Bowes House’s ‘Fabulous Fifties’ week the home hosted a 1950s fashion show. Staff donned their 1950s outfits and paraded along the catwalk in front of residents, families and visitors from the local community. The highlight came as the fashion show came to an end; the main doors to Bowes House opened and onto the catwalk came a Triumph motorbike which drove through Lynn’s Cafe to the tune of ‘Leader of the Pack’, much to the surprise and delight of the audience.
