Treatment centre votes for its Nurse of the Year

Company news

Staff at Care UK’s Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre are voting for their Nurse of the Year with the winner to be announced as part of the National Nurses Day celebrations on Monday May 12.

The Royal College of Nursing has created National Nurses Day to celebrate the enormous contribution made by nurses to the health and wellbeing of patients everywhere.

At the treatment centre near Chesterfield, staff have been asked to nominate their Nurse of the Year. The nurse with the most votes will be awarded the coveted title and will receive the Barlborough Nurse of the Year trophy.

Nurses are also being asked to write down recollections of their early days in nursing. There will be a prize for the best entry and all the entries and photographs will be displayed in the outpatient department.

Clinical Services manager Sandra Swarbrook is excited about the competitions. “I think the display will be a fascinating insight into the development of nursing over the years.  Our nursing staff are from diverse cultures and backgrounds and they have been in the profession for many years. We are all looking forward to seeing their photographs and reading about their memories of healthcare in the region in the 1970s and 80s.

“I never fail to be impressed by the professionalism and dedication of our nurses and I think the Nurse of the Year competition will be a very tight contest, as we have so many nurses who command the respect and affection of their colleagues and patients.”

There will also be a competition for ideas to improve patient care within the hospital.  Sandra said: “It can be simple or more complex but it must lead to an improvement for the patient - whether through a clinical change or suggestions that lead to a more comfortable environment.

“Our patient satisfaction rates are regularly above 96 per cent but we always strive to find new ways to improve our patients’ experience and the quality of the care they receive.”

The centre specialises in hip and knee replacements, ligament reconstruction, arthroscopies, spinal surgery and day cases - including hand and foot procedures and shoulder repairs and replacements - all carried out in three state of the art operating theatres.

The centre, in Lindrick Way, also has 36 ward beds, outpatient and x-ray departments, pathology services, a pharmacy and a physiotherapy gym.
