Leamington Spa care home goes on a dementia adventure

Home news

People in Leamington Spa and surrounding areas are invited to find out more about dementia at Care UK’s Priors House care home on Wednesday 29th April from 12-3pm.

At the free event, Neil Mapes from Dementia Adventure will be joining the team at Priors House to share his knowledge and provide practical tips for those caring for someone living with dementia. Neil will help people to understand the condition, learn how memories are lost and give guidance on how to overcome communication barriers.

Part of an ongoing partnership between Care UK and Dementia Adventure, the free event is designed to help family members and carers gain a clearer understanding of dementia. Neil will also be on hand to answer any questions and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the team at Priors House and take a closer look at the home.

Speaking about the event, Julia Joy, home manager at Priors House, said: “We understand being armed with plenty of expert advice and information can make all the difference for those caring for loved ones living with dementia.

“By inviting Dementia Adventure to host this free event in partnership with Care UK, we can ensure this information is communicated clearly and concisely, with visitors having the opportunity to speak directly to the professionals in this area as well as team members from the care home.”

This event follows the launch of a new monthly dementia support group at Priors House. Members of the local community are invited to drop in and make the most of the help and advice on offer. The free support group will meet on the last Friday of each month, with the first session taking place on the 24 April at 11am. It will be headed-up by Priors House dementia lead, Marie Lavery, along with John Daly from the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK and 25 million people have a close friend or family member living with the condition. 75 per cent of residents in care homes are living with various stages of dementia and Care UK provides extensive dementia training programs for all team members to ensure residents receive the highest quality care.

Those who attend the Dementia Adventure event at Priors House will also be able to collect a copy of Care UK’s Listen, Talk, Connect – a free guide which helps friends and relatives to overcome the challenges they may face in having conversations and general interaction with loved ones living with dementia.

Situated on Old Milverton Lane, Priors House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has a cinema, hairdressers and lots of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
