Jean - the first to have all four major joints replaced at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre

Jean Lawrence, 77, from Avonmouth, Bristol, is the first person to have all four major joints – both knees and hips – replaced at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre, and her life is now pain-free as a result.

Her first operation at the centre was in 2010 when she had her right knee replaced. This was followed in 2011 by her left hip and in 2012 it was the turn of her left knee. Jean achieved the ‘full set’ when she had her right hip replaced in July this year.

Jean’s operations were all carried out by the same orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Jozsef Nemes.

Said Jean: “It is still early days after my last operation, but it is lovely to be able to get about without pain. I’m managing a good 20 minute walk every day, which is something I couldn’t really do before.”

Jean is full of praise for Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre and everyone who works there: “It is absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t fault any of them, from the surgeon to the cleaning staff. Mr Nemes has performed all my joint operations and we have got to know each other quite well. Both he and his colleagues have taken time out to talk to me after each operation - everyone is so friendly and they can’t do enough for you.”

Her experience has been helpful to other people too. One of Jean’s friends has severe anxiety and was due to go to Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre for surgery, but Jean was quick to reassure her. She said: “I told her ‘you couldn’t wish for a better place to get treatment’ and they were wonderful to her. She began being very worried about the operation but came home thinking they were wonderful.”

It is not just friends who are seeking treatment from the centre thanks to Jean’s recommendations – her son-in-law has also had two hip replacements at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre.

Said Jean: “If anyone was worried about going there I would say ‘go for it’ – I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Emersons Green to other people.”
