Birdwatch a flying success at Cedrus House

Home news

Cedrus House had bird-feeders filled and binoculars at the ready when it took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Residents participated in the annual wildlife survey, and recorded the number of birds, as well as other wildlife species, they spotted in their garden.

The team organised various arts and crafts activities ahead of the Birdwatch, including making bird scratch art, wooden bird craft and owl ceramic trinket boxes. The residents were also treated to a special visit by Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, the sanctuary led an informative talk and brought a barn owl for residents to interact with.

Michelle Webster, home manager at Cedrus House, said: “The birdwatch is a popular activity with our residents every year, so we were delighted to welcome Suffolk Owl Sanctuary to join us for the big event. All of the residents enjoyed taking part, and learning more about the wildlife in our garden, in particular the owl species.

“Outdoor activities are important for both physical and mental wellbeing, and have many benefits for older people, particularly for those who are living with dementia. Birdwatching can act as a valuable reminiscence activity, as the distinctive sights and sounds of birds in the garden can help evoke memories. This year was another success, and we’d like to thank Suffolk Owl Sanctuary for joining us.”
