Winchcombe Place marks Dementia Action week with Magic Table launch

Home news

Winchcombe Placewill unveil the first dementia-friendly ‘Magic Table’ in Newbury.

On Tuesday 22nd May, from 11am-12.30pm, Winchcombe Place is inviting the community to mark Dementia Action Week by trying out its brand-new dementia-friendly Magic Table – a novel way to encourage interaction and engagement in people living with dementia. Residents will also welcome children from Winchcombe Primary School to put the Magic Table to the test.

The Magic Table, or Tovertafel, has been specifically designed to motivate the mind and inspire those living with dementia to be active. It is made up of a series of interactive light animations that are projected onto a table, including games such as catching butterflies, sweeping up leaves, throwing a beach ball and nostalgic puzzles.

Having a positive impact on residents as well as visitors, the Magic Table encourages interaction across the generations, creating a fun way for older relatives and younger family members to enjoy time together and strengthen their relationships.

Winchcombe Place will also host a free dementia event for the community, on Wednesday 21st May from 11.00am – 12.30pm. Dementia Friends Champion, and customer relations manager, at Winchcombe Place, Jim MacLeod will be on hand to discuss how best to turn knowledge into action to help create a more dementia friendly community in Newbury.

Cliff Hutchings, home manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “At Winchcombe Place we have a commitment to encourage others to learn about dementia, as well as help the community turn their knowledge into action by making our community more aware of those living with dementia.

“We are incredibly excited to launch the Tovertafel. It will make a positive impact in the everyday lives of those living with dementia – and help families and residents create new memories together.

“This promises to be an interesting and inspiring week of information and guidance to mark Dementia Action week and we look forward to welcoming members of the Newbury community into our home to spread awareness of what it is like to live with dementia.”
