79-year-old Kenneth Alderton was given the opportunity to go out on the open waters again when the care team organised a nautical day out.
Born in Eastbourne on 11thApril 1939, Ken’s passion for boating started in his twenties when he joined his local sailing club. After years spent on dry land, Ken made a wish through Bowes House’s ‘Wishing Tree’ to be at sea again, and the care home got busy making his dream became a reality.
As a result, a small group of residents and Bowes House team members travelled to Eastbourne Harbour to surprise Ken with a harbour boat tour, where he learnt more about the history of the marina.
Helena Barrow, home manager at Bowes House, said: “We love to go the extra mile for the residents here at Bowes House, and our wishing tree is a fantastic way to understand what’s really important to them. Ken speaks fondly of the years he’s spent boating, so we are thrilled we could help him get his sea legs once again.
“Ken always loved being at sea in fine weather, so the conditions were perfect for him to reminisce about his hobby during his younger years – it was brilliant to see him light up the minute he stepped on board. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved and I am so pleased we were able to make Ken’s wish come true.”
