The friendly Shetland ponies created a stir when they trotted into Lauder Lodge. Residents were thrilled to have the opportunity to stroke and pet them, as well as enjoy an informative talk on how they are cared for.
The mini ponies were also taken on a tour of the care home, visiting residents’ rooms to ensure everyone had the opportunity to meet and interact with them.
Michelle Reid, home managerat Lauder Lodge, said: “It was delightful to introduce the Shetland ponies to the residents here at Lauder Lodge. You could see from the residents’ reactions just how engaged they were when given the opportunity to get so close to such lovely animals.
“The mini ponies were so friendly and calming, and we know just how beneficial animal therapy can be for older people – especially for those living with dementia. Being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood, stimulate social interaction and ease agitation – and the ponies were brilliant at doing just that!”
