Local children join Glastonbury Court for rhyming fun

Home news

It was time to share rhymes at Glastonbury Court when it opened its doors to the local community to celebrate National Poetry Day.

Residents at the home joined national celebrations by reading, writing and sharing their favourite poems around the theme of ‘change.’

Pupils from Horringer Court School also joined residents and visitors for a day of rhyming fun. The students and residents worked together in teams writing poems about the seasons – all of which are now on display in the home.

Home manager, Sharlene Van Tonder, said: “Here at Glastonbury Court activity based care is essential in supporting residents to lead fulfilling lives and National Poetry Day was a great example of this.

“It was fantastic to have the local community and children from Horringer Court School join us for a day of poetry fun. It was wonderful to see how poetry can bring people from all ages together, everyone enjoyed reading aloud or being read to.

“As well as being calming and encouraging social interaction, poetry can help people to bring back memories from younger years. This can be especially beneficial for those living with dementia and can bring about a tremendous sense of satisfaction when memories are recalled.

“We had a wonderful time celebrating the theme of ‘change’ and sharing favourite poems with the local community, and would like to say a big that you to everyone involved.”
