Macclesfield care home shortlisted for two national awards

Home news

A care home in Macclesfield is celebrating after being shortlisted for not one, but two Caring UK national awards.

The team at Care UK’s Hollins Park, on Victoria Road, has been nominated for ‘Excellence and Innovation in Dementia Care’ and ‘North Care Home of the Year’.

The Caring UK Awards celebrate excellence across the care sector. The awards were created to highlight and pay tribute to the care home teams who make an outstanding contribution to caring for older people.

Hollins Park, which is rated Outstanding, actively promotes dignity for all residents. The home has a dignity tree, where anyone can hang their thoughts about what dignity means to them. The home team has also produced its own vision and values and every colleague feels that the strongest aspect of the home is ‘family’ – because residents experience consistent care from the same people they know and trust.

Positive risk-taking is promoted at Hollins Park. One gentleman who acquired a brain injury after a motorbike accident was desperate to get back on a bike, so the team worked with a local charity for him to ride on a dual control pedal bike. Another lady now visits the stables where she worked to groom the horses, and an ex-lorry driver attended Truck Fest.

The home has a pub, shop and café which provides residents with independence and purpose: an ex-landlord serves drinks in the home’s pub, and a lady with a retail background runs the shop. There’s also a Tovertafel (magic table) where residents interact over light projected games. The home has seen an improvement in residents’ communication skill and mood, a result of which has led to a reduction in the need for medication.

For residents living with advanced dementia, the team uses the Namaste care model – using all the senses to bring comfort and meaning to each person. A wealth of resources is thoughtfully compiled into a Namaste box; whatever a resident wants or needs, it is made available to them.

Tracy Norbury, home manager, said: “It is wonderful to be have been nominated for two awards. Hollins Park is a home for life, regardless of a person’s challenges. We’re here to find ways to enable each person to live with independence and dignity. From riding a motorbike, serving drinks in our pub or visiting Truck Fest, our team ensures residents live active and purposeful lives.

“I am incredibly proud of the team, who put their all into each and every day at Hollins Park – ensuring residents, including those living with dementia, lead happy and fulfilled lives. We’ve got our fingers crossed for the awards ceremony and wish luck to all those shortlisted!”

The Caring UK Awards winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 15th November.

Hollins Park provides full-time nursing and respite care for people living with dementia. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
