On the buses – Sidcup and Sevenoaks care homes take trip down memory lane

Home news

Residents from care homes in Sidcup and Sevenoaks enjoyed a journey back in time on a vintage bus trip.

Care UK’s Smyth Lodge, on Frognal Avenue in Sidcup, and Weald Heights, on Bourchier Close in Sevenoaks, organised a visit from the vintage red double decker bus, much to the residents’ delight.

Everyone on the trip had a wonderful afternoon and reminisced about catching the old red double decker buses back in the day. Many remember how everyone would jump off while the bus was still moving instead of waiting for the bus stop.

Lorraine Eastmead, home manager at Smyth Lodge, said: “We love to organise special events for residents. Reminiscence activities like these can have many therapeutic benefits for older people – especially those living with dementia – by triggering happy memories from their younger years and the associated emotions.”

Maria Covington, home manager at Weald Heights, said: “It was so lovely to hear everyone discussing their memories of catching the bus, it was such a big part of life back then. We would like to thank Sevenoaks Seniors Forum for putting us in touch with London Retro Bus Hire, which donated the use of its bus for the afternoon.”

Smyth Lodge has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential dementia and nursing care, as well as respite care.

The ethos at Weald Heights is based on person-centred care, which means residents’ values are right at the heart of the home. Choice, variety and luxury are built into every aspect of life at Weald Heights, which offers a combination of professional, individualised care and luxury hotel-style comfort.
