St. Ives care home hosts dementia advice event for family carers

Home news

A care home in St Ives is inviting the local community to a free event to encourage local people to talk about dementia.

On Monday 17th February, from 10am-12pm, the Care UK team at Field Lodge, on London Road, will open the home’s doors for its ‘Let’s talk about dementia’ event, where dementia champion, Keri Barker, will share professional advice and support.

Keri will deliver the session to help individuals understand the different types of dementia, and how family support plans and distraction techniques can help older people to live well with the condition.

The event will also touch on the new and supportive projects being implemented at Field Lodge, including the Namaste project, which shows how a holistic approach to care can support older people with advanced dementia. Keri will also introduce John’s Campaign, a movement to extend visiting rights for carers, including the history behind it and how the care team at Field Lodge recognise the importance of working with family carers as equal partners in their loved one’s care.

There will be a Q&A session to ensure attendees get the most out of the session, alongside an opportunity to meet the friendly team at Field Lodge.

Linda Martinez, home manager at Field Lodge, said: “There are currently around 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040*, which is why we strongly believe in sharing professional knowledge to help support local people caring for a loved one.

“This event provides a great opportunity for carers to meet other members of the community who may also be supporting their loved ones, and we look forward to welcoming local people through our doors for what promises to be an interesting and inspiring morning of information and guidance.”

Field Lodge is a modern purpose-built care home providing full-time residential, nursing, and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has a choice of lounges and dining rooms, along with facilities such as an activity room, cinema and hair salon.
