Hull care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest level’

Hull care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest level’Residents at a care home in Hull celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch inspired activities saw residents at Care UK’s Sunningdale Court, on Birkdale Way, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by South Cave Falconry which brought a variety of owls for the residents to see up close. Residents also enjoyed a special ‘show and tell’ to learn more about the impressive creatures.

Linda Portlock, home manager at Sunningdale Court, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Sunningdale Court, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event. It was wonderful for residents to see birds from the local falconry centre up close, which created talking points about British wildlife.

“Connecting with nature is extremely beneficial for older people, and promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can be particularly helpful for those living with dementia, as it can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.

The home, which features 46 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own hairdressing salon.
