South Shields care home wins national award

Home news

South Shields care home wins national awardA care home in South Shields is celebrating after winning a highly-coveted national award.

Care UK’s Cheviot Court, on Horsley Hill Square, won ‘Best for Specialist Care’ at the Care Home Awards thanks to its outstanding dementia care and experienced team members.

An annual celebration, the Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery, and this year took place virtually.

Every team member at Cheviot Court is a ‘dementia friend’, and the home has its own dementia champion, who can offer guidance to colleagues and family members alike. Judges praised the team’s proactiveness and willingness to always further their knowledge and deliver the highest standards of specialist care, catering for residents with a variety of needs.

Through an array of meaningful activities organised by the lifestyle team, including a dementia choir and theatre club, residents are empowered to live as independently as possible. Cheviot Court also took part in the Namaste Care programme, designed to enable residents living with advanced dementia to feel loved and recognised as individuals through various activities, including massages, in a relaxed setting.

Louise Damms, home manager at Cheviot Court, said: “We are thrilled to have won ‘Best for Non-Clinical Facilities’ at this year’s Care Home Awards. We have a wealth of experience in the team, which is what truly set us apart from the competition.

“Everything we do here at Cheviot Court is person-centred, from the care we deliver to the activities we organise, using residents’ life stories and past hobbies. I’m proud of how the home has become a dementia hub in the community thanks to Tara, our dementia champion – I know her guidance means a lot to residents’ families, who have even set up their own support group here at the home.

“That team spirit truly helped us through the past few months, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work team members achieve every day. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has worked hard to ensure we continue to deliver the highest standards of care.”

Cheviot Court care home has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and offers the highest standards of care, including residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite.
