Sutton Coldfield care home highly commended in national awards

Home news

Sutton Coldfield care home highly commended in national awardsA care home in Sutton Coldfield is celebrating after being highly commended at a national awards ceremony.

Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, attained the commendation in the ‘Best New Care Home’ category at the Care Home Awards thanks to its impressive level of personalised care, which supports residents to maintain their independence and lead happy and fulfilling lives.

An annual celebration, the Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery, and this year took place virtually.

The team at Mercia Grange is centred around its caring, compassionate, respectful and empowering culture, and residents are at the forefront of every decision. When a new resident joins the Mercia Grange family, their life history, interests and preferences are noted in a life story book, which are used by the lifestyle team to help organise meaningful activities for individuals to enjoy.

Designed to promote independence, everything in the home has been carefully thought out to support residents to lead fulfilling lives. In the dementia suite, room doors have been painted to look like the front door of a house. Each resident has chosen their favourite colour, and a memory box next to the door, filled with personal items, helps residents to navigate their way to their own room.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ in its first CQC inspection, the home’s team are passionate not only about supporting residents, but each other. With regular training and appreciation weeks, relatives, residents and colleagues can write about the team members they are grateful for, and are offered sweet treats and breakfast as a way of saying thank you.

Commenting on life at Mercia Grange, one team member said: “This is how care should be delivered. I’ve never worked anywhere like it.”

Shirley Gibbs, home manager at Mercia Grange, said: “It is wonderful to have been highly commended in the ‘Best New Care Home’ category in the Care Home Awards.

“This is testament to the team’s hard work and determination to ensure every resident leads a happy and fulfilling life, and that has been even more important over the last few months. Each day, my colleagues astound me with their positivity and hard-working attitude, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to each and every team member for their efforts in making Mercia Grange a wonderful place to live.”

Mercia Grange is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia, and short-term respite care. The three-storey care home, which features 67 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
