A care home in Newbury is helping to create a dementia-friendly community virtually.
On Wednesday 25th November, from 6.15pm-7.15pm, Care UK’s Winchcombe Place care home, on Maple Crescent, will be kicking off its six-week long dementia support course with a ‘Dementia Friends’ session.
Winchcombe Place’s Customer Relations Manager and Dementia Champion Vicki Lambourne will be covering a number of topics to help people understand what it is like to live with dementia. There will also be support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with dementia.
Participants will then receive a link to a follow-up webinar each week as part of a six-week course designed by Jennifer Hall, Senior Specialist Nurse Practitioner from the Integrated Care Home Team at Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, who will host a special Q&A session later on, once the course has been completed.
Kerry Thompson, Home Manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “At Winchcombe Place we are committed to encouraging others to learn about dementia, and we are really proud to be able to offer such a complete course to our fellow community members – all for free. We want to educate people, but also help the community turn their knowledge into action by making our community more aware of those living with dementia.
“We look forward to hosting our first session and virtually meet the participants. These are set to be popular, so booking a place is essential.”
For anyone unsure about how to take part in the virtual event, help is at hand. The team at Winchcombe Place will host the event using Zoom, an online meeting space. Simply call or email Customer Relations Manager, Vicki Lambourne, and she will send a link to join the event and share her tips to make the most out of every event.
