National inspectors praise East Kilbride care home

Home news

A care home in East Kilbride has been praised by Scotland’s national care inspectors for its attentive team which has supported residents throughout the pandemic.

Following an inspection, the Care Inspectorate report gave Care UK’s Cathkin House care home, on Glasgow Road, an overall ‘good’ rating.

National inspectors praise East Kilbride care homeThe care home was rated ‘good’ in all five categories, including leadership, team members, planning care and support, residents’ wellbeing, and care and support during the pandemic.

Inspectors highlighted how each team member spoke to each resident in a warm and dignified way, and the positive relationships that existed within the home. Residents spoke highly of team members, with one commenting: “They look after me well here.”

The report also stated that residents were supported to maintain contact with family and friends during the pandemic, whether that be via mobile phone and video calls or window and garden visits when guidelines allowed. Carers and activity teams also spent an increased amount of individual time with residents to keep spirits high and encourage social interaction.

Relatives and residents were also involved in the continuation of their, or their loved ones, care. Although meetings were unable to take place face to face, families were able to take part in the six-monthly care review over the phone, and were supported to make decisions about resident needs.

Leadership within the home was also praised in the report, and team members told inspectors they felt well supported by the management team and by each other. Daily heads of departments were able to attend meetings, and distributed information to their teams to ensure everyone remained involved in the home’s plans, policies and procedures.

Nicola Rae, Home Manager at Cathkin House, said: “The team work incredibly hard to create a warm, homely atmosphere and ensure the highest standard of care, so I’m delighted that everyone’s hard work has been recognised by the Care Inspectorate.

“Receiving an ‘Good’ rating shows just how dedicated the team is in looking after every individual’s needs, and we will continue our hard work to ensure residents receive compassionate, person-centred care.

“Over the last year, we have adapted to a new way of life, but our ethos remains the same. I am unbelievably proud of everyone at Cathkin House and I would like to thank each and every team member for all that they do.”

To assess service standards at Cathkin House, the Care Inspectorate spoke with team members and residents on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.

Cathkin House is a modern care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
