Come what May – St Ives care home residents host traditional May Day celebrations

A St Ives care home hosted its very own traditional May Day celebrations, to mark the beginning of Summer.

Residents at Care UK’s Field Lodge, on London Road, were delighted to spend the afternoon creating and dancing around their very own may pole, as well as watching and learning a variety of maypole dancing styles from around the world.

Linda Martinez, Home Manager at Field Lodge, said: “Here at Field Lodge, we love celebrating England’s traditions and customs, as they often provide a fantastic opportunity for reminiscing.

“Many residents have fond memories of taking part in May Day celebrations in their childhood, and of dancing around the may pole. Re-connecting to childhood activities can be incredibly beneficial for older people, as they can prompt happy memories and the associated emotions.

“Everyone had a wonderful afternoon dancing around the may pole, it was a fantastic way to encourage residents to be active, make new friends, and most importantly – have some fun!”
